After much fanfare, Samsung’s highly anticipated Galaxy S24 series of smartphones is finally here, marking a new era for AI features in smartphones. This is because these new flagship phones have a major focus on AI software features, dubbed as ‘Galaxy AI’.
As expected, the new S24 lineup includes the vanilla Galaxy S24, the S24+, and the S24 Ultra, all of which come with new AI features. These are mostly enabled by their new chip, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 from Qualcomm as well as Samsung’s own Exynos 2200. These top-tier SoCs can run AI processes on-device without the need for an internet connection.
That being said, here are all the new AI features in Samsung Galaxy S24 phones.
Circle to Search
Thanks to these AI processing capabilities, the phone can perform tasks such as Circle to Search.’As the name says, this will allow users to highlight anything on their screen and Google search it instantly, like the name of a landmark or the background of someone’s Instagram photo. Simply hold down the home button and draw a circle, highlight, scribble, or tap anything to search it.
Live Translate
Live Translate is now available in the Galaxy phone app, which provides real-time translation for two people speaking in different languages. This is further enhanced by the Interpreter feature, which brings up a split-screen that transcripts live conversations during a phone call.
Chat Assist
Similarly, Chat Assist can be found on the Samsung Keyboard which can translate all messages typed on the keyboard and do the same for incoming messages. It can also suggest different writing styles for different occasions, such as casual, formal, informal, social media, and more. It currently works with 13 languages.
Notes Assist
Through the Samsung Notes app, users will now be able to summarize notes, create templates and covers, and streamline notes with pre-made formats. It can also recognize handwriting scribbles and turn them into digital text.
As for the voice recording app, it will get Transcript Assist to summarize and translate recordings through AI voice recognition. It will also be able to tell different people apart from their voices.
ProVision Engine
The ProVision Engine comprises a suite of AI-driven utilities for the Gallery app. Its Generative Edit feature allows for the removal of objects, with AI seamlessly filling in the gaps. This tool is also adept at compensating for spaces that appear when straightening misaligned shots. Additionally, the Instant Slow-mo function is capable of creating extra frames, enabling smooth slow-motion effects in videos.
Custom Wallpapers
Taken straight out of Google Pixel’s handbook, comes Custom Wallpapers. Just like Google’s offering, this allows users to create customized wallpapers based on different presets and prompts as shown in the image above. This is a feature that is expected to become mainstream in most smartphones in 2024.
The good news is that these Galaxy AI features are also coming to older Samsung flagships and foldables including the S23 series, the Z Fold 5, Z Flip 5, and the Galaxy Tab S9.
