In a world increasingly captivated by the allure of generative AI features, 2023 stood out as a hallmark year for AI, a trend that shows no signs of waning in 2024. Recognizing this, OnePlus has decided to venture into the field of AI technology similar to its rivals such as Samsung and Google.
The company made headlines today with the announcement of its first AI feature, the AI Eraser, similar to Google’s Magic Eraser.
Designed to remove undesirable elements from photographs, the AI Eraser aligns OnePlus with a host of other companies that have introduced similar functionalities. OnePlus has released a series of comparison images to demonstrate this new tool, highlighting its ability to eliminate distractions, such as unintentional photobombs and miscellaneous objects, thereby enhancing photo quality.
The AI Eraser is coming to newer OnePlus phones this month including the OnePlus 12, OnePlus 12R, and the recently announced OnePlus Nord CE4, which boasts the Snapdragon 7+ Gen SoC that can run on-device AI tasks.
The editing feature will come to older flagships as well such as the OnePlus 11 series and the foldable OnePlus Open in all regions. The European region is the only exception since it is going to get AI Eraser later this year in Q2 2024, meaning before the end of June.
Details regarding the delivery method of this new feature remain somewhat ambiguous. It is yet to be confirmed whether the update will be integrated into the OxygenOS operating system or if it will be part of an update to the OnePlus Photo Gallery app, which is the intended platform for its use.
Additionally, it is still uncertain whether the AI processing required for the feature will be conducted directly on the devices or if it will require an internet connection.
OnePlus has promised more AI features to come soon and has said that the AI Eraser is only the first step. OnePlus President and COO Kinder Liu said: “AI Eraser represents the first step in our vision to liberate user creativity through AI and revolutionize the future of photo editing, empowering users to create remarkable photos with just a few touches. This year, we plan to introduce more AI features, and we look forward to their upcoming availability.”
