Artificial intelligence (AI) will soon be able to enhance a computer’s security, personalization, and ability to intuit user needs, believes AMD’s vice president, Jason Banta. However, scaling down Large Language Models (LLMs) like OpenAI’s ChatGPT will be tough to scale down so that they can run efficiently on consumer devices such as laptops.

Banta believes that generative AI will be widely adopted by laptops in 2024 and that there will be a pivotal development in 2025. Samsung has already introduced several AI features in its latest Galaxy Book laptops, but this is just the beginning.

Banta envisions a transition from predominantly cloud-based AI applications to compact, real-time models that operate directly on personal computers and can be trained on-site. Multiple tech giants are working on the ability to run LLMs locally on consumer devices, but we have yet to see this dream materialize in commercially available machines.

Banta, the VP of AMD said: “While previously we were the ones who had to learn how to use them, in the future computers with artificial intelligence will be able to anticipate our needs. This will enable new audio and video experiences, facilitating the generation of creative content, a process that can be challenging on a traditional computer.”

However, AMD may not be the first to feature on AI-powered PCs. This is because Microsoft has plans to introduce “AI PCs” next year, but these will be powered by Intel and Qualcomm instead of AMD chips. Microsoft’s upcoming Windows 12 is also anticipated to be an AI-centric OS.

AMD’s MI300 AI chip, released in early December, is meant to rival Nvidia’s AI GPUs used in AI training and inference. The Instinct MI300X GPU and MI300A APU are meant to serve the same purpose. These chips are being shipped to AMD’s OEM partners.

In a relentless pursuit of market dominance, AMD is strategically positioning itself against Nvidia, leveraging a combination of competitive pricing and enhanced software solutions. This strategic maneuver has sparked interest from tech titans such as Meta, Microsoft, and OpenAI, who are eagerly eyeing AMD’s latest offerings.

Undeterred by this challenge, Nvidia remains resolute, unveiling their formidable arsenal which includes the highly-anticipated H200 GPU and the cutting-edge Grace Hopper super chip, both slated for release in the second quarter of 2024.

Furthermore, Nvidia’s well-established lead in the realm of machine learning software applications running seamlessly on its hardware solidifies its formidable presence in this fiercely contested arena.
